Admittedly, Edinburgh lags behind many of the world’s other capital cities in terms of large scale street art projects. So it was with great excitement that we discovered the ongoing ‘Our Nation’s Sons’ project. Based on the illustrations of Edinburgh College of Art student (ECA) Joe Caslin, five of his large-scale drawings are due to appear across the city.
‘The aim of the project is use these portraits drawings of young men as a tool to provoke and question current social and media representations of this generation. The drawings once installed will generate spaces throughout the city charged for an encounter between the subject/protagonist and the passer-by/interpreter. ‘
The largest of these (so far) appeared last Saturday. At an impressive 40ft, this piece dominates the Cowgate area of Edinburgh. Building upon last year’s Inside Out project he worked on alongisde JR, hopefully this is the start of larger scale projects like this becoming a regular feature on the landscape.
Check out the photos below, as well as the video explaining a little more about the project.
Now that’s what I call workin’ large!!
Nice slideshow!
